What is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy?

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is an approach to therapy that allows individuals to develop a relationship with horses through structured activities that can help the individual build their confidence, self-esteem, and patience.

Why Horses?

Horses are social animals.  They have the special ability to mirror exactly what human body language is telling them.  By using their distinctive size, power, and personality of each horse, clients are allowed an experiential opportunity to work on assertiveness skills, communications skills, creative problem-solving, leadership skills, self-control, increasing their sense of responsibility, relationships, improving self-confidence, overcoming fears, improving their ability to trust, and controlling their emotions.

Who Benefits from Equine Assisted Psychotherapy?

Children, Adolescents, and Adults can benefit from this unique approach to therapy.  Common needs of clients who participate in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy include: depression, impulse control disorder, anger management, substance abuse issues, relationship problems, low self-esteem, and victims of abuse.  However, the scope of how each person is able to benefit will vary, as the program is individualized to the person’s needs with their interactions with the horses being the center of the treatment.
